Although he created artwork worldwide, from Palestine, the Philippines to Italy, few people know much about the life of this anonymous artist. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">GATS is best known for his iconic mask, which started appearing when he was in the Middle East. The mask with its flowing beard can often be spotted in hidden alleys, underpasses, abandoned buildings and on a massive scale on rooftops. The all-seeing gaze has become a touchstone for the bay area mural scene. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Representing a sense of duality, GATS’s totem has been filled with intricate insignia over the years, speaking to the artist’s personal experiences</span></p><h2><strong style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); Each letter in the Greetings from San Francisco postcard mural spells out history, architecture and tales of San Francisco.</p><h4 class="headline">The Immigrant Story Behind the Classic “<strong>Greetings From</strong>” Postcards  Long before Instagram, Americans showed off their travels using Curt Teich’s cheery linen postcards.</h4><p class="headline">Linen <strong>Greeting From</strong> postcards, named for their embossed linen-like texture, were tremendously popular in the United States during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. There is no exact count, but deltiologists—people who study postcards—estimate that publishers developed over 150,000 different images and printed millions of copies. Cards typically depicted American scenes, venues, and businesses. They sold for a penny or were given away by local entrepreneurs or at tourist destinations.  <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-788 alignright" src="https://umbrellaalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/umbrella-alley-greetings-from-sf-mural-IG-pose-600-600-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://umbrellaalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/umbrella-alley-greetings-from-sf-mural-IG-pose-600-600-300x300.jpg 300w, https://umbrellaalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/umbrella-alley-greetings-from-sf-mural-IG-pose-600-600-150x150.jpg 150w, https://umbrellaalley.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/umbrella-alley-greetings-from-sf-mural-IG-pose-600-600.jpg 594w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p><p class="headline">Article: @SmithsonianMag <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/immigrant-story-behind-classic-greetings-from-postcards-180970894/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Read more</a></p><h2>ABOUT MAXFIELD BALA:</h2><p><strong>Maxfield Bala Creative</strong> is a multi-faceted mural company proudly based out of the San Francisco Bay Area.
